"In which place can I plant a tree"

Sequoias grow at altitudes ranging from 900 m to 2100 m in their homeland. For Slovakia, this means that you can plant Mammoth Sequoia in practically all habitable locations. The limiting factor when planting will be the presence of sufficient moisture in the soil throughout the year. Redwoods are able to suck much of the moisture out of the ground during hot summer days, so proper placement of the tree must be considered. After planting and during long droughts, the tree requires adequate watering for growth and vigour.

"How much will the sequoia grow in my lifetime"

Mammoth sequoia can grow 2.5 cm per year and up to 1 m per year under optimal conditions after the age of three years. The trees have the potential to grow faster each year. This makes the species one of the fastest growing conifers in the world. If the rate of thickening is maintained, you can expect the trunk of the tree to be 50 cm in diameter in just 10 years. At 30 years, the tree can reach a diameter of 1.5 m and the height of a 7-storey apartment block. The tree thrives in sunny locations with sufficient soil moisture, which allows it to quickly gain volume and height.

"Why my redwood turns brown for the winter"

Sequoias and redwoods younger than 5 years old may acquire brown, bronze, purple needles with the onset of winter. This change is due to the temperature fluctuations caused by the onset of winter. The change in colour does not harm the tree in any way, it is just a defence mechanism during the winter period. The arrival of spring and the increase in temperatures is noticed by the tree and by April-May the tree has regained its rich green colour and begins to push out new growth.

"How far apart should I plant them"

First of all, it depends on the purpose for which you are planting them. If you want to have a small woodland that should function as a "hedge" we recommend planting within a 2 m span. If you want to plant the trees as an avenue, plant them at least 10-15 m apart. We do not recommend planting trees close to the house, no closer than the 10-15 m mentioned above. As the trees grow they would be able to damage the foundations and pipes.
